Welcome, May babies!
In this article, we are going to be uncovering the glowing green stones known as emeralds! They are part of the Beryl family with morganite and aquamarine. Emeralds are one out of the four precious gemstones alongside ruby, sapphire, and the most known diamond. This stone is one of our favorite gems because it embodies nature. Whenever you gaze deep into this gemstone the inclusions dance around like plants and vines intertwining in a deep forest. The stunning inclusions that seem to make a life force aura appear inside these gems are called “Jardin” a French word meaning garden.
I am not the only one that’s pulled into the alluring color and characteristics of emeralds. They have been a beloved stone for centuries from Cleopatra to the royalties of many great civilizations. Emeralds have been said to hold mystic powers for thousands of years. For example, back in ancient times, they were believed to possess the ability to enhance intuition and bestow foresight. In medieval Europe, emeralds were thought to have had healing properties, curing ailments ranging from poor eyesight to infertility.
In addition to the captivating metaphysical properties, heirloom-quality emeralds have gained value throughout time due to the rarity of these world-class gems being unavailable in today's market. This is caused by the excessive mining of these higher-quality specimens.
While hunting for these green beauties make sure you take into consideration the 4 Cs, like diamonds, most stones will be priced by color, cut, clarity, and carat weight. For this stone, I like to focus on the first 3 Cs because a smaller emerald with finer color, cut, and clarity can be more valuable than a larger one that lacks the other 3 Cs. Make sure that you take a close look at the clarity of the stone. If you see a piece that’s too clear with no inclusions, you may be looking at a man-made specimen. Since emeralds are a type 3 gemstone meaning that they naturally have inclusions. Even if you’re working on a budget (trust me I know the feeling) emeralds can be found at any price range.
Another thing I wanted to touch on is to be careful when purchasing them online. For the vast world of the internet, unfortunately, there are a lot of people who try to indirectly label dyed green beryl as emeralds when they shouldn’t be classified as so. At the end of the day when you’re looking to purchase a high-quality specimen make sure that it comes with a creditable certification such as GIA or AGL, just to name a few. To conclude, emeralds are a stunning stone that holds a lot of weight in the world of gems, you can truly never go wrong with a gem that is as beautiful as the month it represents!
